The Art of Starting a New Project: A Leader's Guide

13 May 2024

As a technology leader, I've initiated countless projects throughout my career. Over time, I've developed an approach that consistently leads to successful outcomes. Here's my step-by-step guide to starting a new project:

  1. Develop or understand the vision: Every project needs a clear vision. If it's not already articulated, work with your team and stakeholders to develop one.
  2. Define the scope: Clearly identify what problems you're trying to solve and what's out of scope. This clarity helps prevent scope creep and keeps the project focused.
  3. Encourage ideation: Once the vision and scope are clear, let your technical teams brainstorm and problem-solve. Their expertise and creativity are invaluable at this stage.
  4. Understand the context: Get to know both the system you're working in and the people involved. This holistic understanding is crucial for effective problem-solving.
  5. Respect the past: Approach the project with respect for what has gone before and for the people involved. This attitude can provide valuable insights and foster better cooperation.
  6. Foster collaboration: Remember, you can go further faster when people are working in concert with you. Encourage open communication and teamwork throughout the project.

By following these steps, you create an environment where innovation can flourish, teams can collaborate effectively, and projects have the best chance of success. Remember, good project management is as much about managing people as it is about managing tasks.
